Yarns, finally!
It is not unusual for a customer to walk into our shop, look at the luscious colored skeins hanging from the beams and ask, “Do you sell that beautiful yarn?” Up until now we have had to respond that unfortunately we do not, but perhaps we should. Well the moment has come. Swans Island is excited to announce that we are now offering certified organic merino knitting yarns. They come in two weights, fingering and worsted. The colors are, of course, from natural dyes. We are starting with natural white and grey along with 10 colors. One of the wonderful things about dying in this manner is that everything works together. We have had great reviews so far in terms of the color and the feel of the yarns. Please visit our yarns on the web site, or look for them in a yarn shop near you.

Another fine yarn!

We recently received the following photo and note from friends far away.  They have prompted us to ask readers to send their favorite Swans Island photo and story (to swans@midcoast.com) so we can make this a newsletter tradition:

“Attached is the photo I promised. It is of one of my most favorite people in the world, Theresa Chapman, an Australian, who was a Watch Officer aboard the Schooner Maggie B from Tasmania to Papeete. The picture was taken in the Tasman Sea between Hobart and Nelson, NZ during our circumnavigation. The current issue of Wooden Boat has a big article on the Maggie B and the voyage. The Swans Island throw was much coveted.”

Hope our wakes cross again soon.

The Farnsworth, Robert Indiana, and Swans Island
One of the real gems of midcoast Maine is Rockland’s Farnsworth Art Museum.  At the museum’s 2009 Maine in America Gala, well-known artist and Vinal Haven resident Robert Indiana was chosen as the fourth annual honoree, and the Farnsworth asked Swans Island to create a custom indigo throw with Indiana’s iconic HOPE symbol appliqued in relief.  We love working with local friends and were honored to supply the Farnsworth’s Maine in America gift to Robert Indiana, an undertaking that has prompted us to consider other applications of this new (to us) custom process.

If considering a trip to Maine this summer, we think you should do it and of course plan a visit to our studio while you are here.

Visit Us
If you have any plans to visit Maine this year, please include us in your itinerary. On the way up you could stop in Freeport to visit the Thomas Moser store where our blankets are on display, or even stay at the Harraseeket Inn's new Moser-furnished suite, where you can sleep under a beautiful Swans Island blanket.
