Spring 2009

Customers and friends often ask us how we manage to communicate our story to the world outside of Maine without advertising. Our response is that we are focused on the creation of products that speak for themselves and embody something of the unique materials and personalities that have made them.  Experience has proven that such focus is the best way we can use our resources.

This March we received an urgent call from Chris Harkins whose DC area company purveys fine protocol gifts.  Michelle Obama needed something special: a hand crafted American present for the family of the visiting Prime Minister of Ireland.  The gift needed to be at the White House before St. Patrick’s Day.  The First Lady had seen and touched a sample of our spring green throw and had “fallen in love with it”.

Like many Americans we followed with great interest the arrival of the Obamas in Washington and noted that Michelle’s favorite colors are green and yellow. We had sent samples of these colors to Capitol Gifts, Chris’s company, but were hardly prepared when she called and asked whether we could ship immediately.  We happened to have a spring green throw on the loom and were able to finish it and sew on a label: “Custom Designed for Michelle Obama”.  It was overnighted just in time, and presented within a week of the call by the First Lady, quite an honor for Swans Island and Maine.

We do have plans to grow and to let more people know about
the products we dye and weave by hand here in our studio.  At the same time we are fascinated by the process of being discovered serendipitously, of doing what we do best and watching and waiting.

PS: To wit; we just found out that Bill Laurita will be interviewed on Martha Stewart's weekly radio segment "Authentic America", on May 6th at 8:30 a.m. ET.

If you have any plans to visit Maine this year, please include us in your itinerary. On the way up you could stop in Freeport to visit the Thomas Moser store where our blankets are on display, or even stay at the Harraseeket Inn's new Moser-furnished suite, where you can sleep under a beautiful Swans Island blanket.
